For the Love of Books or Money? Why we must stay true to ourselves.

"I’m not good enough to do this author thing! I can barely pay the bills never mind buy groceries!"

Are you a writer who has said (screamed) something like this? Do you get discouraged when that quarterly royalty report rolls around with the discouraging numbers where there aren’t enough place holders before the decimal point?

Well, join the millions who don’t get those big dollar signs and big five contracts! I mean, not everyone will become the next Stephenie Meyer, JR Ward, or even the super lucky EL James for that matter. Despite the fact only a select few make a lot of money on their books, many still decide to jump in the proverbial sandbox and showcase their work to the world. Some will get upset when they get those statements and give up entirely, a sad but true fact I've seen too often in my time, but others continue to press on and type away, fingers flying across keys in the hope that someday, someway...

Why? Because we love to write! We have to write. It's just part of who we are.

Think about this. The ebook revolution opened doors for many authors like myself to tell our stories to the masses. This might not have happened just over ten years ago but we got lucky. The print market was pretty much closed to authors who like to dabble in high heat, kinky bdsm, and/or lgbtq romances. And my niche, paranormal romance? Just forget it! The market is and always will be saturated with many authors who are far more seasoned and have already built a huge following. And, well, I’m not the fastest, most prolific author who can push out a book a month, so there goes that market in reality. I'm a tiny fish in a vast indigo sea.

However, with the inception of electronic publishing I am able to weave my tales of vampy love and alpha werewolf shifters, getting them out to readers without my work just being a dusty old paper book hidden on a shelf in some library where no one ever sees it, and I can market my books to the best of my ability, hopefully effectively enough to make sales, even though that's an ever-changing, higher grasping task, too. Does it work with every book? Not always. Will I keep at it? Yes, I will. I'm stubborn or stupid, I never know which, but either way the biggest thing is I'm driven and determined to serve up my books to the readers.

Why? Why put myself under scrutiny for reviewers and even some book bloggers who seem to be know it all’s? You know, the ones who are armchair editors claiming my books have "too much detail" or "spelling mistakes"  because I happen to be a Canadian author and we spell things weird sometimes. Weird to them, maybe, but imagine all my years of school and learning the English language, and then you try to curb the natural love of the "u" and other differences and force your writing to become US Standard spelling to appease the masses. It ain't easy!

The reason I keep going day after day? I love to write. I definitely didn’t decide to do what I do every day for the money. My royalties last quarter were okay, in my opinion, for a relatively unknown writer. But, there are so many other authors who are household names, on many readers auto buy lists when it comes to my primary genre. I’m most likely somewhere near the bottom of the "who is who" list, but I’ll keep on bookin’ and hope to get there because it's just in me to never give up without a fight. I have to know I've tried and done the best I could at it no matter what.

One huge key is to have a support system to kick you in the ass when you feel down. Yes, I have one, whether I feel like I do some days or not. The many authors in the genre who will give a kind word, lift others up, or simply give me a kick in the pants when I need it the most, these authors who've become friends rather than simply associates,  honestly, they see me through some of my worse "I'm done" days and steer me back on track more often than not. I have to send a huge, heartfelt thanks to each and every one of them because without that support I am pretty sure I'd have walked away long ago and lived to regret never knowing if I could have made it or not.

Yes, there are many authors out there who won’t help other authors. Cause, it's all a competition, right? Yeah, not in my little world but the "me, me, me" mentality is most certainly strong in this business. Or  you run into authors who claim they are there to lift others up but in reality you can see through their "front face" to the real person behind the screen when their actions don't meet their words unless it's self-serving in some form or another, but...that’s on them. They can live with knowing they aren't what they make themselves out to be. I ain't one of them and I never will be.

Writing is a lonely business and, in my opinion, when you close yourself off in a bubble and don't interact online or even in person with fellow writers, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice.  It's not about stepping on others to get ahead or using them for all you can–which, sadly, happens far too often– it's about hanging on tight and going for the ride with those on this roller coaster with you for better or for worse.

Not getting the support at home from the significant other? Well, that’s something that varies by household but you are not alone. My husband is openly not very supportive of my career. I think he's only ever once told me he's proud of me after a few too many drinks and let me tell you, that hurts like you wouldn't believe and plays in to my constant thoughts of never being good enough no matter the milestones I may reach. Hey, just like the USA Today Bestselling Author status I gained in November, on his birthday no less, but that seemed to go entirely unnoticed and like I'd achieved nothing more than my normal mundane task of making dinner.

Yeah, I'll get off that topic now as I've made no bones about my jealousy of those authors whose husbands and families support their career choice and celebrate each and every win with steak dinners and flowers. I've long since realized (not accepted cause I can't understand it) that my life partner just doesn't care what I do in a day. My achievements simply don't interest him. That's something I simply live with, I guess.

I do have two growing kids, and one fully grown up young man (my life light, truth be told) who occasionally send a high five or "congrats, mom" my way so I guess there's some support somewhere at least. I know others who have less so believe it or not this isn't a complaint.

I have to do what I can to support my family, and even if I were making more the deposits still only come once every quarter so it's about making that almighty dollar stretch as far as I possibly can. A feat I'm lucky enough to be talented at, thankfully.

Do I get discouraged, too? Hell yes! Sometimes almost daily! But then I  think about how I’d feel if I gave up. Yeah, I could write for my friends and not worry about promoting, just put stories up on my blogs or reopen the stories forum I had so many years ago. Or I could go back to writing for rag mags. *groan*

Sure, that would make some naughty old men (and women, too) happy, I'm sure. Would it be the best solution for me? In my case, no. I might never make millions off my writing but that’s not my sole purpose for being here. What is? I love to write. I have many, many stories to tell, and dammit, I feel I’m good enough but yet I can still always improve. Am I the best? Far from it, I know, but I’ll always do what I can to get better!

Whew! So, I guess what I'm trying to say to my fellow authors is, no matter what genre you write, we all feel the same. We could make more. We want to succeed more.  Everyone has different levels of success so you've got to decide what makes you a success to you.

Stop comparing yourself to the top writers or even your peers who have made more of a name. Concentrate on making yourself, your writing, your online presence and marketing skills better! Take what you learn every day and promo and market yourself, not just your books, though, whenever and wherever possible. Tune out the naysayers, the negativity, the drama, and surround yourself with positive people. A lot of them, including me, are in the same boat as you are. Being an author isn’t easy but we do it for the love of writing!

And remember, most of all, when you are having a shit day...there's lots of us out there riding along right beside you. We are here to lend an ear, a helping hand where we can, and best of all...that big kick in the pants you need to get you moving again. Don't ever give up on the dream cause we can do this!

Lovingly penning the next crazy assed installment of whatever gig I have on the go–ask my friends, they will tell you I am certifiable some days, but then most authors I know are in some form or another... Yours,,.. Crazy Lady G

Apostro-what?

Hello, my lovelies,

Today I bring you an article, by request of The Mistress herself, dealing with one particular punctuation mark - the apostrophe.

Now, many of you know what an apostrophe is and how it should be used, however, many more still use it incorrectly. This easy to follow guide should hopefully clear that up for you all and make everyone's lives easier!

First, what is an apostrophe? The obvious answer is a punctuation mark that looks like this: ' But what is it used for?

The apostrophe serves two main purposes. The first is used to indicate one or missing letters in a word and is often used to shorten one or more words into a single word. For example, does not becomes doesn't and cannot becomes can't. Are you with me so far? Good, because here is where things get just that little bit more complex.

The second use of the apostrophe is to indicate that something belongs to someone. Examples of this include Belthizor's article and the cat's whiskers.

See how the apostrophe can make a big difference? What frustrates me the most is when people fail to use the apostrophe appropriately. The simple way to avoid incorrect use is to slow down and think about what you're trying to write - is it belonging or missing? if it is neither, then don't use an apostrophe.

Now that I've cleared that up, I hope for your sakes that you follow my advice. I will not be very happy if I see things like "Theres no way out!" or "Those animals are cat's". Use an apostrophe, and make everyone happy.

Until next time, happy writing, and remember "Let's eat grandma" changes with the addition of a comma - "Let's eat, grandma". Punctuation - it saves lives!

Yours,

Lord Belthizor, Assistant Editor for Mistress Journals and Naughty Nights Press (NNP)

Paige Tyler has 3 New Releases in December just for you! DEAD SEXY, SEXY SECRET SANTA and PROTECTIVE CUSTODY. Just in time for the holidays!!!

DEAD SEXY by Paige Tyler comes out December 10th with Ellora's Cave.

Synopsis:

Romance author Simone Kent thinks she might just have found the most perfect guy in all of New York City – in bed and out.

But Drake Parrish is about as far from perfect as any man can get. Eight years ago, he was cursed by an evil Voodoo priestess to live part of his life as a zombie. Since then, he has lived like a recluse on New York’s Upper East Side, afraid to go out for fear he’ll suddenly turn into one of the walking dead.

Being with Simone reminds him of everything he was forced to give up and Drake finds himself feeling things for her that he hasn’t felt in a very long time. When the Voodoo priestess learns of their relationship, however, she comes after him again. She doesn’t believe Drake has paid for his sins and is determined to make sure he won’t have a future with Simone, even if that means killing the woman he loves.

Excerpt:

As she led him up the steps to the second floor, Drake found himself wondering if she would ask him in. And wondering what he’d say if she did. When they came to a stop outside the door to her apartment, Simone turned to give him a smile.
“I had a great time tonight.”

“Me, too.”

She caught her bottom lip between her perfect white teeth and chewed on it thoughtfully as if unsure what she wanted to say next. It was probably an unconscious gesture, something she did whenever she was thinking, but to him, it was sexy as hell and all he could think about was kissing her.

Surely, one kiss couldn’t hurt. He desperately wanted to. He hadn’t kissed a woman in so long. It would be nice to see if he still remembered how.
Before he could stop himself, Drake tilted Simone’s face up to his and pressed his mouth to hers.

She tasted just as sweet and delicious as he thought she would. Her lips were soft and pliant under his as she kissed him back, her tongue eagerly seeking his out.
Drake groaned and slid his hand into her hair, deepening the kiss. Simone sighed into his mouth, running her hands up the front of his shirt to grasp his shoulders. The feel of her touch was like a tonic to his deprived soul and he let out another groan, deeper this time.

He ran his free hand up her side and around to her breast, cupping it through the soft material of her dress. He couldn’t stop himself and apparently, Simone didn’t want him to. She moaned and arched against him. He could feel the heat of her pussy through their clothes as she pressed up against his hard cock. Damn, she felt good.

Drake drew her bottom lip into his mouth and gently suckled on it before slowly kissing his way along the delicate curve of her jaw. Simone clutched his shoulders and tilted her head back. He eagerly trailed a path of hot kisses down her neck, then back up, his mouth finding hers again. Simone looped her arms around his neck, pulling him in even closer as their tongues met.

Down the hall, a door slammed, reminding him where they were.
Drake dragged his mouth away from hers, his breathing ragged as he tried to regain control. He had to get it together because he was about five seconds away from doing something really stupid. Like taking her to bed. “I should go.”

Her lips curved into a sexy, flirtatious smile. “Or you could stay.”

God, how he wanted to. But as much as he’d love to spend the rest of the night exploring every inch of her body, he couldn’t take the chance he might go zombie on her right in the middle of sex. Talk about coitus interruptus, And it had already been almost four days since he last turned, which meant he was already pushing his luck.

“You don’t know how much I want to,” he groaned. “But I can’t.”

Simone looked up at him with those big, blue eyes. “Why not?”

“Because I…” He hesitated, trying to come up with something that would sound believable. “I have a column due in the morning and I haven’t even started on it yet.” She knew all about deadlines, so she would understand that. Besides, he did have a column to write, it just wasn’t due until next week. “Rain check?”
She looked disappointed, but she smiled anyway. “Absolutely. How does coming over for dinner tomorrow night sound?”

It would be crazy to agree when he could be so close to having an episode, but he couldn’t say no. Not when she asked in that soft, sultry voice. “Sounds great.”
“Good. Be here at seven.”
“Seven it is.”

She pulled him down for another long, slow kiss on the mouth. “Don’t be late.”
His mouth twitched. “I won’t.” He bent his head to kiss her again, then groaned. “If I don’t go now, I’ll be here all night.”

Simone laughed. “Would that be such a bad thing?”

“Not to me, but my editor at Money Issues might not be too understanding when he doesn’t find my column sitting in his inbox tomorrow.”

She sighed. “Deadlines can be a real pain in the butt sometimes. Okay, go home and write your column. I’ll cuddle up with a bowl of ice cream instead.”

He chuckled. “Sounds better than taking a cold shower, which is what I’m going to be doing when I get home.” He closed his mouth over hers once more. “See you tomorrow night, beautiful.”

Resisting the urge to pull her into his arms again, Drake turned and walked down the hallway toward the stairwell. At the top of the steps, he glanced over his shoulder to see Simone standing where he’d left her, a sexy curve to her lips.

It took every ounce of strength he possessed not to go back and pin her against the door for one more long, lingering kiss. God, what he wouldn’t give to spend the night with her. Man, it was going to take more than a cold shower to get her out of his head.

Also coming December 10th by Paige Tyler "SEXY SECRET SANTA" from Ellora's Cave!

Synopsis:

Hollie Kerr has lusted after hot architectural engineer Dirk Fraser ever
since they started working together, so she’s thrilled to discover he’s her Secret
Santa at the office Christmas party. What she doesn’t know is that her friend has
led him to believe Hollie prefers a good spanking over a boring, old present any
day.

Though Hollie is surprised when Dirk put her over his knee, she can’t pass up the
opportunity to get spanked by a hunky guy like him. Her upturned bottom isn’t
the only thing that gets hot, however, and soon they’re having sex right there in the office. By the time they come up for air, the party has wrapped up, their
coworkers have left and the building is locked up tight.

What’s a girl supposed to do when she’s trapped all night in the office with
a gorgeous guy? Have sex in all the places she’s ever fantasized about, of
course.

PROTECTIVE CUSTODY Coming December 1st from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid!

Synopsis:

Paisley McCoy is a sexy reporter who writes about the San Francisco club scene
for a local magazine. Having a dad on the police force has led to one hard and fast
rule--she doesn’t date cops. She likes her men sensitive and intellectual, two
qualities in short supply in any cop she’s ever met. However, when her safety is
threatened and her life in danger, she gets stuck with a standard-issue cop for a
bodyguard--aggressive, opinionated, and certain he’s always right. In short, the complete opposite of the kind of man she usually goes for.

Gray Beckham is a no-nonsense cop who’s peeved about being taken off a
major burglary investigation to babysit the captain’s bratty daughter. Just
because she’s gorgeous doesn’t change the situation. His career is
important and she acts as if the whole situation is a joke and insists she
doesn’t need his protection. While she might be sexy as hell, there’s no way
he’s going anywhere near her, not if he can help it.

Despite their differences, though, Paisley and Gray can’t deny the
chemistry between them. As that connection turns into a romance neither
can avoid, they find out that the stalker is a far greater threat than they
originally thought. They’re dealing with a crazed lunatic who has decided
that if he can’t have her, no one will.

Mistress Journals Erotic Stories Forum is now re-opened

Dearest Naughty Friends,

After a whole lot of work, by my incredible Techie, converting the Mistress Journals Erotic Stories Forum over to the new format from Phpbb to SMF for the forum structure in an attempt to better control the amount of fake accounts and spam on the forum we are disappointed to report we were unable to make the change.

During the final testing phase yesterday it was discovered that the SMF forums did not support many of the options and features we at MJ's rely on for the "look and feel" of our forum as we had expected from it's description.

In addition we found that not only did the new structure not disperse with the issues we currently have with our initial forum setup but it added in more issues that were were not prepared to bother dealing with at this time.

We felt it was simply more important to have our forum available to our Authors and Readers with a few quirks on the board then have it unavailable any longer.

So in a nutshell, we have reverted back to the old system for the time being with the hope that in the future we will be successful in converting it in another way.

We hope that you will all resume your writings and reading of the incredible stories and poems the forum has to offer and for those of you who were waiting to create your accounts you may now do so.

To expedite your acceptance simply inbox me on FB your chosen name for your account and I will personally approve the account manually so you can gain your access sooner.

If you wish to become an Author on the forum and share your stories or poetry I can also add you to the "Authors" group at that time rather then you having to apply for it and wait the 24-48 hours it normally takes to be accepted.

Please remember to always use valid email addresses when creating your account or you run the risk of it being removed as a possible spam account. As we seem to be getting about 50-75 spam accounts per week it is very difficult to tell who is real or not so we usually just go by the email account confirmation if the IP address is clear on the "Stop Forum Spam" page.

Ok, babbled enough, fourm is back up! Get to it! Mistress Journals Erotic Stories Forum awaits you...

As always we invite you to join us on our Official Facebook Fan Page too!

Yours Faithfully,
Lady Gina Kincade,
The Mistress Of Erotica

Stuck for words? Try this..., An insight revealed by "Belthizor"

Hello my ever-loyal underlings,

In this article, I thought I'd break away from the normal bitch session about poor grammar to reflect on something I learned today.

Perhaps the most common and frustrating problem among writers is the dreaded Writer's Block *dun dun DUUUN*.

Those two words alone are enough to strike fear in the hearts of many a writer. Fortunately, there is a solution... well not a guaranteed solution, but certainly one that can make a big difference.

So, what is this 'miracle cure' of which I speak? It's really quite frightfully easy.

The trick is Journal Writing. The answer lies within you.

Everyone is capable of writing, and we all know it, yet bringing the talent to the forefront can be a difficult process at the best of times. However, journal writing, or as my Professional Practice Teacher calls it: "diarising" can help get those creative juices flowing. The blurb to a brilliant book, which I will reference at the end of this article, states:

"Everyone can keep a journal. And everyone can learn from the journal writing experience. About personal insights, the meaning of dreams, "hangups" and stumbling blocks to success, our hidden fears and secret love affairs."

Still not convinced? Then read the following extract, from the same book:

"The writing of a journal is a simple process. It doesn't demand that we interpret a multitude of books or conform to a set of specific guidelines. It simply suggests we start at the most logical point in time - now."

The best bit about a journal? It's private, and it doesn't judge. In fact, it encourages you to write. It wants you to write. It calls for you to write. I can hear it now "Beeel-thizor!" it calls. "Come write in me! You know you want to... come to me..."

So, what are you waiting for? Get to writin'!

Your journal should be seen as an extension of you. A way for you to get down on paper (or computer) your deepest, darkest thoughts, fears, dreams, relationship issues, or even your thoughts on how much you absolutely adore that gorgeous hunk of man that is your one and only Lord Belthizor (I know you dream of me ;)).

Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil. James Allen - "As A Man Thinketh"

Until next time,
Happy writing, and happy editing,
Lord Belthizor
Assistant Editor for Mistress Journals and Diploma of Community Services Work student.

Publishers Note: The views of the author do not necessarily reflect those of the publisher. We are very aware that the majority of men, and quite a few women, in our audience dream nightly naughty dreams of "The Mistress" herself, not the lowly Lord Belthizor (even if he is a sex god)...lmao!

"The Alcove" by Gina Kincade, Now posted on Mistress Journals!

"The Alcove" by Gina Kincade is A short story about a spontaneous sexual experience that will have you hot and wanting more in minutes!

For the entire story, please visit Mistress Journals Erotic Stories Forum. The Alcove can be found under the "Erotic Couples" Section of Erotic Stories.

Teaser from "The Alcove" by Gina Kincade

Laughing, they ran into the nearest covered doorway to escape the summer evening downpour that had erupted. The door appeared to belong to the closed up building, not the apartments connected to it and the alcove was deep enough to fit them both and keep the heavy rain from reaching them.

Reece and Anna had gone out for dinner and were supposed to go see a movie, but had decided they just couldn’t keep their hands off each other long enough. All during the cannelloni dinner, at the Italian restaurant, they touched each other under the table, rubbing and groping like teenagers. They were on their way back to Anna’s apartment when the dark clouds covered the setting sun and torrents of water struck down upon the city.

Watching the rain come down, wondering how long it was going to last, Anna shivered in her light peasant shirt and short skirt, both of which were now soaked through and sticking to her like a second skin, forming around her lush, perky breasts and sliding over her slim waist to cling to her hips. Her white, bikini panties, now see through in patches, were just barely visible where the skirt now hugged the top of her thighs. Her long dark hair was dripping down her back in trickling streams, adding to the chilling of her skin.

Reece, feeling her shiver, pulled her into his embrace offering her his body heat and rubbing his hands briskly up and down her arms and back. He enjoyed the way Anna snuggled into him, her head tucked beneath his chin and her mouth just inches from his throat. The feel of her warm breath in the hollow of his neck and caressing down inside the top of his shirt was making him quite hard. He wasn’t even noticing the rain anymore it was all about Anna.

Running his hand over the wetness of her shirt and pinching lightly at the hard nipple bulging from it, he began nuzzling her neck, gently biting at her ear and throat with little nips and tugs creating a slight redness where his mouth touched her. Oh man, he was on fire, he wanted her body, to be inside her, here, now.
