Excerpt:

Moving as quickly as she dared, she followed him to the kitchen with her plate in her hand. “I can wash the dishes if you want to put them away.”
“You don’t have to do that. You’re my guest,” he protested.
“Think of it as my way of repaying you for your medical services today.” Payton went to step sideways around him to reach the sink and stumbled on Chinook who was still patiently following her around. Her knee twisted and buckled under her, but instead of hitting the floor this time, she landed against Luke’s rock solid chest, his arms wrapping tightly around her. Her nose pressed against his collar bone, and her lungs filled with his scent. Damn, she really wanted to lick him right there where his pulse fluttered beneath his scent.
“Are you okay?” His concern drew her attention away from her horny musings.
“Yeah.” Her voice sounded hoarse, and she cleared her throat. “I just moved too quickly I think. This dog seems to be everywhere all at once.”
“You two will find a rhythm soon enough. He’ll learn to anticipate where you’re going, and you’ll start sensing where he’s at. Then you won’t stumble over each other so much.” Luke held her still, and she was debating pulling away from him when his hand came up to cup the back of her head, his nails scraping lightly across her scalp. “Payton…”
She tipped her face up, and caught sight of the fire in his brown eyes before his mouth captured hers in a passionate kiss. The tingles started at their joined lips and traveled throughout her body centering on her nipples and the now dripping slit between her thighs. She sighed with pleasure when he pressed closer, his tongue dipping into her mouth and tangling with hers. Good lord, the man knew how to kiss.
He was masterful, his large hands supporting her as if she’d become and extension of himself, and his mouth making love to hers. She’d never experienced a kiss like this one, and she knew she’d never forget it until the day she died.
When they broke apart, panting heavily, he rested his forehead against hers. “I didn’t plan that, but I’m not sorry.”
Payton’s eyes fluttered, and she looked up at him warily. “You’re not? I mean, I didn’t plan it either; it just sort of happened. We can forget it ever happened, okay?”
“No, not okay.” Luke was frowning now, “Why would I want to forget it? That was incredible. There’s fire between us Payton.”
“It’s probably just because it’s been so long since I was kissed. I mean, I was overseas with my unit and then in the hospital for months on end, and—”
Luke actually took a small step backwards now. “So you’re saying you’re just horny then? It could have been anyone?”
She shook her head, fighting to control the rising panic in her chest, “No, I just… Look, I’m not in the right headspace for a fling, or a boyfriend, or a lover, or anything.”
Luke’s visage grew even more firm, and he released her completely. “Your situation is duly noted; however, I’m not going to apologize for being attracted to you. In fact, I’m not going to hide it from you either. You can pretend you’re not feeling the buzz from that kiss, but you and I both know you are.”
“I don’t know what I’m feeling right now.” She spoke softly, dropping her eyes to the ground. “I just know I’m not ready for it, whatever it is.”

A Taste From One Of My Current WIPs...Darkness of Light In The Dream, Book One

Co-authored with the talented bestselling Author Kimberly Gould, please enjoy this (unedited) taste of
Darkness of Light (In The Dream, Book One) a YA/NA Paranormal Romance coming in 2017!
Cover Art by Willsin Rowe

“What I mean is—” He stepped closer, running his hand down her bare arm.
Sunshine and summer heat didn’t prevent goosebumps breaking out over her skin. He stood close enough that if either of them inhaled deeply their chests would touch.
“You’ll be around for while.”
Her breath caught and she licked her lips.
Lucius mirrored her and bent slightly. For a second, she thought he’d kiss her and she closed her eyes both to imagine that and encourage him to do it.
“Because—” Her eyes popped open and she held back disappointment, only just. “There’s a mid-summer festival on the twenty second. Everyone will be there and you should come, too.”
“With you?” Had she said that or just thought it?
“If you’d like.” His hands played with her fingers and scarf caught between them. “What do I owe you?” He pulled the cloth free, letting it flutter toward the counter.
Rev gave herself a shake and rounded the counter to open the classic register. It couldn’t do more than hold cash, but it fit the shop too well to replace. She also pulled out an IPad and found the scarves in the inventory Dad had helped build for Grandma. She changed the stock quantity from eleven to a ten and looked at the price.
“Twenty dollars. Tax included. Do you have cash?” she asked, her finger hovering over the button to release the drawer.
“Yep.” Lucius passed over a twenty as well as a card with his phone number. “Let me know if you want a tour of Littleton, or, y’know, something else.” His grin was like the sun, bright and warm, blinding and melting. In an attempt to save herself from one or both, she forced herself to look at the scarf and folded it, placing it in a box.
Eventually, she had to meet his eyes again; eyes as sultry as the July day. He wouldn’t have to do much to charm her out of her panties—Pants! Her pants. Heat flaring in her cheeks, she broke eye contact. “Yeah. I’ll call you.”
“Thanks.”
Oddly enraptured by this stranger’s pull on her, she watching him, his strong back, tight bottom, as he sauntered his way back out the glass door with a resounding tinkle of the chimes.
Rev watched through the door as Lucius encountered another man of similar age and coloring outside the store. He even had the same tattoos on his arms. Both men were on their toes, leaning forward and Lucius clenched his empty hand into a fist.
The other man turned from Lucius to look through the glass straight at her and Rev froze in place. He had brown eyes, too, but dark, deep and cold. Dark hair cut short, this man had more curls than Lucius and his jaw was darker, shadows of stubble beneath his nose and mouth.
Looking back to Lucius, he shook a finger at him, said one last thing, and walked away. Lucius’ smile was gone, his brow furrowed as he turned and headed in the other direction.
Rev spent the next hour playing Candy Crush and trying to decide if the two were family or not. Her game was interrupted by another call from Grandma.
“Aren’t you supposed to be in surgery?”
“Aren’t you supposed to mind your elders? You’re already in the pot from that last call. You’re only turning up the heat. Now, who came in and what did they buy?”
Rev’s sigh would be clear to her Grandmother. “A guy, Lucius. He came to get a birthday present for his mom. He took one of the scarves.”
“Lucius? Lucius Clearwater? Young thing, big smile?”
“Um, yes. He’s my age.”
“Good Lord, is he eighteen already? Yes, yes, I’m nearly done. You can wheel me out in a minute.”
“Grandma! Get off the phone!”
“Fine. But, Rev, Lacy Clearwater’s birthday is in October.”
“Really? Does Lucius have a brother?”
The phone disconnected but not before Rev heard the nurse trying to take it away. She almost pitied the woman.
How would she find out who the other man was? The card with Lucius’ number was still on the counter. She had a good idea why he’d be buying a gift in July for a birthday in October. She was flattered and interested in getting to know Lucius better.
“Clearwater…” After searching online for Lucius Clearwater and finding beautiful, hilarious, and adorable photos as old as five years, she was pretty sure he was a hometown guy who loved his family.
Dark Eyes, for lack of a better name, showed up in several of the family photos, but he was untagged, giving her no indication of their relation or his name.
In any case, she would be calling Lucius. Spending the night alone at Grandma’s wasn’t exactly grabbing her imagination.

Do Amazon Kindle Unlimited Page Reads FAIL Offline?

Do Amazon Kindle Unlimited Page Reads FAIL Offline? - The Zon refuses to acknowledge any such potential glitch.

Ever download a KU book and then take your device out of your home country or to the beach on vacation? Yes? Well then you may want to read this!

Did you know that even just a trip in the car where you have no online access can *trip* the KU page read fail.

Recently, starting October 18th, I had an opportunity to test my theory regarding KU page reads and offline access, and what I discovered likely won't shock many authors, but it certainly isn't paying them for pages read either.

While away from my home country in October I stumbled upon something you may find very interesting.

Ever try downloading a new KU book while not in your home country and get an error message? Yeah, me too, though with all the other stuff going on, figuring maybe it was simply a fluke, I pretty much let the issue lie until a couple of weeks ago.

So, KU royalties and page reads have seemed excessively low for months, which would be okay if it were just my books (I'm not so high on myself as to believe everyone loves my work) but I publish books for several other authors as well as high page count boxed sets, so it's not just me and this was further confirmed by recent reports showing a lack of page reads in books that otherwise sold quite well, which is exactly what prompted me to research this (yet another) potential KU page read glitch and I've now confirmed my theory.

A few weeks ago when I was headed out to one of my many full day medical trips I decided to test this newly discovered bit of glitchy information just a bit more.
Before leaving home I downloaded MY OWN KU book to my iPhone Kindle App (which has no data plan so it's wifi only), so we are talking the app here and not the kindle specific...yet.

Anyway, I purposely went to 3% in this 3k+ boxed set before leaving the house.  During the drive (passenger, of course) I slowly scrolled through the boxed set, reading some of the pages as I would any other book, just so I had some idea if my theory was correct or not. Fast Forward to five hours later: I returned home with the boxed set sitting at 83% now read (iPhone back on wifi) and checked the KU reads - no change. 24 hours later I checked again...and you guessed it - no change.

So, me being the type I am, I took my IPad the next trip (synced on all devices, right?) and picked up exactly where I'd left off on the book - so the sync part worked, at least - and I scrolled to the end of that boxed set on the iPad and then set myself up for another book, shorter but still KU, but didn't open the book until I was in the car where I then paged through the full book and started a third by another author, also a KU book. The third book didn't even show as read once I did hit an internet connection. (Thank you Tim Hortons hot spot)
That's right, 24 hours later neither book showed more than 1 page reads! Yup, that's right, almost 4000 pages not counted when I was OFFLINE. Nor did it update when my device was back online, ever.

So, readers, if you enjoy your KU books while relaxing on a beach (which IS your right for paying for this service) and you don't have an active internet connection, authors don't get paid.

Authors, for those of us who fly or drive from convention to convention, and for many of us that means away from our home country, the KU books you read while away from home don't get paid to your fellow author. For me personally, this is a heck of an amount of reading!

Now, of course, I went to Amazon with my concern about offline pages read and got the canned response of "of course the authors get paid" and there's nothing wrong with our service", and even when I asked for it to be escalated to a supervisor all I got was the "we will look into this further and get back to you."

Well, about a week later they did, and the response wasn't unexpected but it did piss me off because the almighty Zon refuses to admit they don't count offline page reads and their *service* only counts the last marked ONLINE location in the book.

So, in a nutshell, readers could read dozens of books while offline and on holiday and authors won't get paid for a single page read. But, of course, Amazon refuses to address this as an issue any more than they did the page flip feature. Ironic, huh?

Try it yourself and see what you find out. You can do it from the comfort of your own home simply by putting your eReader into airplane mode, thus extinguishing your online status for a while. Have fun and, please, feel free to tell me what you discover.
Maybe if more authors and readers knew about this glitch Amazon might actually address it, though I won't hold my breath.

***Note: My KU subscription is not used to inflate my own KU reads but rather to support my fellow authors enrolled in the program.
Occasionally, I do use the program to establish research on how effective Amazon's application of this program works. Not thrilled with what I find, usually.
